Junior Cup - National Semi-Final
Our Leinster title winning Junior Cup team
competed in the National Cups & Shields finals at Castlerock
Golf Club on Wednesday 14th September. Unfortunately the inclement
weather had rendered the course unplayable for the first allocated
practice day on Monday 12th and almost unplayable for the second
on Tuesday 13th.
The semi-final was played at 12.00pm on Wednesday 14th against
the Ulster champions, Lurgan Golf Club. The team was managed by
Jonathan Cooney and Paddy Kelly and they selected David Fox, Sean
Fitzgerald, Michael Gaynor, Tony Lacey and Ciaran Blaney to play
with Martin Murray, Dave Roberts, Michael Curran and Peter Noonan
as reserves. The course was presented in excellent condition and
it posed a serious challenge to the players in a stiff breeze.
It transpired to a very tense occasion with a nail-biting concluding
match. David Fox and Sean Fitzgerald won the first two matches
on the 16th and 15th respectively and Lurgan won the final two
matches which left the match between Michael Gaynor and sixteen
year old Michael McSherry of Lurgan GC to decide the outcome.
This match was always very close, Michael Gaynor won the 9th and
11th to edge one ahead but the match was level after thirteen
and thereafter followed three halved holes before Michael won
the seventeenth to go back ahead.
Michael hit the green in regulation on 18th but was at the back
of a severe stepped two-tier green whereas his opposition had
missed the green some twenty-five yards right and was in ten inch
high grass. However the Lurgan youngster found the ball and managed
to hack it onto the edge of the green and then hole a twenty-five
foot putt for a miraculous par which Michael narrowly failed to
match as his eight foot par putt slipped by the right edge. With
momentum behind him the Lurgan player secured a winning par in
the match on the nineteenth as again Michael had a putt narrowly
miss the hole to extend the match.
It was a fantastic match, played in a very good spirit but unfortunately
lady luck deserted Co. Meath at the end. The Club would like to
thank the many supporters who made the long journey to Co. Derry
to support our team and also to both thank and congratulate our
Junior Cup team and its managers for their tremendous achievement
in securing the first Junior Cup title to be won by a Club from
the Royal county.

North Leinster
Mixed Team -Winners 2011

North Leinster Mixed
winners . Sep 3rd 2011.

Our North Leinster
mixed foursomes team once again did both themselves and our club
proud by winning the final in Headfort Golf Club on Saturday last.
It was a nail biting finish as Antoinette Brady and Brendan Callan
had to win the 18th & 19th holes in the final match to square
the final at five matches each. It then came down to a sudden
death play-off. Our nominated pairing of Antoinette & Brendan
were equal to the task and with two excellent pars they won out
in great style on the second play-off hole.
Team pairings on the day were:
George Crolly & Patricia Giles, Dominic Murray & Josephine
Hutton, Tom & Anna Gaffney, Pauric Doyle & Tess Mahon,
Brendan & Antoinette Brady. Subs: Tony Heraghty & Monica
Woolfson. It was most unfortunate that Nina O’Reilly, who
had played in all the previous matches, was prevented by injury
from participating in Headfort.
Both Annette and myself would like
to thank all the members of the panel for their efforts and cooperation
during the summer months as it made our job as team managers very
easy. Also we would like to thank all the club members that came
out to support the team during the year and specially last Saturday,
it was much appreciated.
Finally, we would like remind members
that this was just the first of three finals we have been fortunate
enough to qualify for this month. The Newsam Cup Final is on Saturday
10th at 2.00pm in Royal Tara against Townley Hall and the Junior
Cup All-Ireland Semi-Final is on Wednesday 14th September at 12.00pm
in Castlerock Golf Club, Co. Derry against the Ulster champions,
Lurgan Golf Club. All your support for these two teams will be
most appreciated.
Team Managers,
Frank & Annette.

as far back as the early 40’s with Jerry Buckley from
Bray G.C. being twice World Champion (1947-50) and was also
the first Irishman to win the championship. Terry Adams from
Tullamore G.C. was the driving force behind the inauguration
